Engine Co. OPS Training, DCFD Style
Thursday evening January 22, Lt. Craig Duck, DCFD Engine Co. 6 conducted a training program on Engine Company Operations- DCFD Style at MCFD Station No. 2. Lt. Duck, a highly decorated 18 year veteran of the District of Columbia Fire Department is presently assigned to DCFD Engine Company 6, and has served on a number of busy engine and truck companies in Washington, DC including DCFD E-10. Lt. Duck previously served with the Freeport Fire Department, Long Island, N.Y., with his fire service roots beginning in Central New York as a former Moyers Corners brother firefighter assigned to Battalion 2 and as a former Fire Explorer.
Lt. Duck provided insights into various aspects, duties and operational responsibilities of Engine Company operations. With the focus on firefighter safety, incident stability and fire suppression, Craig lead an interactive lecture on riding position responsibilities, considerations for hose line advancement, considerations for hydraulics and apparatus chauffer/PO responsibilities and a lively discussion on the responsibilities and impact that Engine Companies truly have on the fireground. Discussions on "wagon" placement, size-up factors, safety considerations, officer responsibilities, training needs and proficiency were a common element throughout the program. It was a great honor for the department to welcome back into quarters one of our own, who has done so well in his career. A common theme and statement that was carried throughout the night was "Everyone Goes Home!" Lt. Duck was clear in his message: "Engine Company operations have significant risks associated with interior operations- But use sound judgment, obtain the required training and risk only when there is a true benefit. " Remember- "Everyone Goes Home!". The department command and company officers and all firefighters extend our appreciation to Lt. Duck for taking the time to drive to MCFD from Washington to share with us his insights and experiences.
