Halloween Safety tips
- Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled flame-resistant or flame-retardant. Avoid billowing or long trailing features.
- Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.
- Keep highly flammable decorations well away from all open flames and heat sources, including light bulbs, heaters, etc.
- Use extreme caution when decorating with candles, and supervise children at all times when candles are lit. Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from all combustible items.
- Remember to keep exits clear, ensuring decorations do not block escape routes.
- Use flashlights and/or chemical light sticks as alternatives to candles when decorating pumpkins, walkways and/or yards.
- Instruct children to stay away from open flames. Review with your children how to stop, drop and roll in the event their clothing catches fire.
- Instruct children who are attending parties to locate the exits and plan how they would get out in an emergency.
- Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting.
- Follow the rules of the road. When crossing the street, stop at the curb and look both ways for moving cars before crossing.
- Accompany your children while trick-or-treating.
- Instruct children that are old enough to trick-or-treat alone, to stay with a friend at all times and avoid unlit homes and strangers.
- Lastly, warn children not to eat any treats before an adult has carefully examined them for evidence of tampering.
Make Halloween a fun, safe and a happy time for you and your children!
