MCFD Members Complete NFPA 1403 Training
Dec 18, 2005 - 12:00 am
On 12/18/05, twenty-seven MCFD members completed training on the methodologies and regulatory compliance requirements of the NFPA 1403 Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions. The training program was developed & conducted by the NYS Office of Fire Prevention and Control (OFPC) and presented by NYS Fire Instructor John Perkins.
The NFPA 1403 standard was promulgated and first issued in 1982 by the NFPA following a series of tragic training exercises, nationally that resulted in numerous firefighter line-of-duty deaths in the training environment. Milford, Michigan; Boulder, Colorado; Parsippany, New Jersey; Greenwood, Delaware and Lairdsville, New York all have significant lessons learned that must be implemented into each organization's training management program.
The standard involves specific requirements for pre-requisite training, evolution planning, development, implementation, supervision & management oversight, monitoring and records management of live fire training evolutions in acquired structures, training center burn buildings and exterior fire evolutions of a variety of types. Presently the command and line officers of the department are reviewing a number of proposed draft standard operating procedures developed by staff personnel to not only strengthen our compliance capabilities to the NFPA 1403 standard, but to also ensure with the greatest degree possible, that all risk issues can be mitigated in the training environment to ensure the highest degree of safety to all our fire personnel.
