Knowledge is Prevention. Overexposure to high temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stoke. With rising temperatures it is more important than ever that crews remain adequately hydrated and rotated to rehab frequently.

Heat exhaustion is caused by excessive fluid loss. This disorder gives adequate warning by increasing fatigue, weakness, anxiety, and drenching sweats. Other signs and symptoms are headache, nausea, dizziness, disorientation, cool/pale clammy skin.

Treatment for Heat exhaustion includes seeking a shady place or air conditioning, increasing fluid intake, cool off with cold/cool towels. Calling 911 - for medical assessment and treatment.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency caused by the failure of the heat-regulating mechanism of the body, due to high tempeartures and humidity. Signs and symptoms include: headache; flushed, dry and warm skin; sweating stops; rapid, bounding pulse; incoherent speech; disorientation; aggressive behavior; change in level of consciousness; core temperature of over 105 degrees F.
Treatment for heat stroke needs to be immediate. There should be no delay in Calling 911 for medical treatment. Also seek a shady place or air conditioning, remove wet clothing, apply cool wet towels. Rapid transport to an Emergency room is imperative.

If there is any question at all - do not delay in Calling 911.
