Signal 99 - Wetzel Road
Jul 31, 2007 - 02:32 pm
At 1239 on Saturday July 28th, 2007 the volunteers of the Moyers Corners Fire Department were alerted to a possible kitchen fire at 4378 Wetzel Road. E-11 (Capt. Fedorich) was on the air at Seneca Mall on a Fire Prevention detail with a five man crew and went en route almost immediately. BC 3 (Chura) and BC 1 (Bailey) also quickly answered up for the alarm.
BC 3 arrived and reported smoke showing with a hydrant in the front yard. As crews were assembling at all four stations, E-11 arrived, secured a water supply, and made a quick size up of the fire after confirming that all residents were safely out of the structure. The bulk of the fire was located in the C/D corner of a 1 ½ story wood frame, Cape style home. A 200’ 1 ¾” attack line was quickly stretched to side C as the signal 99 was struck.
E-11’s crew was making entry as E-21(Lt. Izzo) quickly arrived and secured a second water supply and stretched a 2” line to support E-11’s crew. The seat of the fire was located and fire suppression began as E-41(Lt. Zaferakis) arrived 3rd due and stretched a 1 3’4” line to the front door. Upon noting that fire conditions were improving, E-41 quickly transitioned to conduct a primary search of the structure, which was clear. At about that time, BC Bailey reported that the fire was knocked down.
The fire was quickly knocked down and E-11 began to hydraulically ventilate the structure as E-21 checked forextension above the room of origin, which was also negative. T-2 (Capt. Driscoll) split crews and assisted in pulling ceilings and checking for extension, and also going to the roof to ventilate. E-31 (OIC Lyons) secured utilities and R-4 and S-4 (Kennedy/Hawkins) supplemented interior crews in opening up the structure.
R-3 and S-3(Matthews/Braciszewski) set up R.I.T. in the front of the structure. Additional crews from the Liverpool F.D. (T-2 and C-4) responded and assisted with overhaul and Baldwinsville F.D. R-6 arrived as the RIT upon the signal 99. NOVA ambulance and Clay P.D. also responded to assist along with various EM units and the O.C.F.I.U. Additional companies also provided coverage move-ups during this period.
The cause of the fire was determined to be food on the stove. Unfortunately, several family pets perished but a family of hamsters were safely removed from the structure, to be reunited with the residents! MCFD did return to the scene later in the day to mop up hot spots.
