Just at the halftime mark of the sold out Syracuse vs. Villanova basketball game, MCFD was alerted to a reported house fire on Gaskin Road in the Battalion One response area. Battalion 1 Chief Steve Zaferakis arrived first with heavy smoke showing from the single story residence and established command. After a brief size-up, a Signal 99 was struck as fire was evident from the rear of the structure. Car 4 [Crispin] and Car 3 [Stevens] arrived moments later and assumed the operations sector. Engine 41 [Lt. Watson] was the first due Engine Company. They brought in the closest hydrant and stretched an attack line. Rescue 4 [Lt. Beardsley] arrived and stretched a second handline. Truck 2 [Lt. Zevotek] arrived and prepared for ventilation and entry. As 41 got to the front door and entry was made, heavy fire then rolled out of the structure. A brief aggressive interior attack was made by crews until operations called for an exterior attack due to failing roof conditions. Engine 11 [Lt. Schweitzer] pumped Engine 41's hydrant, and their crew assisted on the scene. Car 2 [Race] assumed the safety officer position. Car 1 [Wisnowski] was assigned to manpower. Rescue 3 [Captain Lyons] covered the RIT assignment. Engine 31 [BC Dembowski] brought in a third hydrant and stretched a line to Truck 2 for a master stream. Engine 21 [Captain Izzo] staged with manpower. An elevated master stream by Truck 2 knocked down the bulk of the fire and allowed crews to re-enter the structure. The fire was contained in 30 minutes. Also assisting on the scene was Liverpool Truck 2, Clay Engine 21, and an engine from Belgium Cold Springs. NOVA ambulance stood by.
