Onondaga County Firehouses Open Their Doors

Onondaga County Firehouses Open Their Doors
Apr 28, 2010 - 10:10 pm

From the Onondaga County Volunteer Firemen's Association website:

In a coordinated united effort to solidify the ranks of each of the 57 fire departments in Onondaga County, the general public is openly invited to stop at ANY volunteer fire department on the first weekend in May to explore and consider the possibility of joining.   New members are needed to serve in some capacity as a volunteer firefighter.  The specific date and times are Saturday, May 1st from 9 AM to noon and Sunday, May 2nd from noon to 3 PM.

Recruitment Chairman, George Davenport, along with OCVFA President Rich Webster, both feel it's necessary to increase the ranks of volunteers to reduce the need to hire (or increase the number of) paid staff in our cash-strapped communities.

Every volunteer fire chief in the county was contacted to make a commitment to open their doors to residents.  They encourage neighbors to stop by, talk, see what's involved and discover there are a number of ways to serve in a volunteer fire department.

Each department will work independently in regards to what activities will take place in their fire stations.  Some may have an information officer available with literature.  Others may have a full-fledged open house event with refreshments and demonstrations.  Please call your local department for specifics.

President Webster reminds all residents to consider bringing along their high school aged children, as many departments also offer Junior Fire Department memberships for youth between the ages of 14 and 18.
