Thursday May 20th, 9pm.

Belgium Cold Springs Fire Department was alerted to a head-on collision on River Road. BCSFD Chief Evans arrived on the scene and indicated that extrication would be required on both vehicles. He then started Moyers Corners Rescue 4 to the scene. Crews from MCFD Station 4 were already in quarters at the time of dispatch. Battalion 1 Chief Zaferakis, Rescue 4 [Lt. Watson], and Deputy Chief Crispin answered the special request. Upon arrival, Chief Zaferakis was assigned to the Safety Officer position while Chief Crispin handled the Operations Sector. Rescue 4 was directed to handle the extrication of the driver of the SUV, while crews from Belgium Cold Springs handled the sedan. Extrication became a challenge as the vehicles were located next to each other and against a guardrail along the riverbank. Rescue 4 performed a full roof removal while medic's from Mentor Ambulance established an IV on the driver. Belgium Cold Springs crews also performed a full roof removal of the sedan, as well as a "dash roll" to free the driver of the sedan. Total extrication time for both patients was 37 minutes. The driver of the sedan was transported via OSCD Air 1 to Upstate Hospital while the driver of the SUV was transported to Upstate via Mentor Ambulance. Both MCFD and BCSFD worked extremely well together under very tight conditions. A well coordinated effort allowed crews to safely and effectively free the driver's of both vehicles.
