MCFD Welcomes 2010-2011 Student Bunk-Ins

On Sunday August 22nd, 2 returning and 4 new bunk-in students moved into Stations 1 & 2 as Stations 3 & 4 are under going renovations. Staying at Station 1 are 2nd year student Sam Colburn from Manchester Fire Department, 1st year students Matt Buttenschon from Stittsville Fire Department and Aaron Nipper from Palermo Fire Department. At Station 2 is 2nd year student Ryan Pidgeon from Franklin Fire Department and 1st year students Chad Schaefer from Shortsville Fire Department and Tom Young from Weedsport Fire Department. Once renovations have been completed at Stations 3 & 4 Aaron will be assigned to Station 4 and Tom will be assigned to Station 3.
After moving in a meet and greet Luncheon was hold at Station 2 for the students. Program Coordinator Greg Shaffer welcomed the students and their families along with having the students complete the necessary paperwork. Deputy Chief Steve Race also welcomed the students and their families. During the luncheon Battalion Chief Steve Zaferakis presented a Certificate of Merit to 2nd Year bunk-in Ryan Pidgeon for his efforts in saving a life at a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. Also presented at the luncheon to the 1st year students were their badges by the 2nd year students.
The Bunk-ins participated in an intensive week long training program that included: Kitchen Cleanliness and Safety, Blood Borne Safety, EMS Protocols, SCBA/Mask Confidence, Engine, Truck and Rescue Operations along with Fire Ground Safety and Haz Mat. After completing this training the students are now eligible to ride along. Many thanks to Firefighter Fred Sears, Lt. Mike Hoosock, Deputy Chief Jason Ormsby of Liverpool FD, Past Chief John Perkins, Past Chief Chet Fritz, Past Chief Dave Cowburn South Bay FD, Firefighter Greg Shaffer, Captain Jered Zeppetello and Past Deputy Chief Steven Wisely.
This is the 2nd year of combined training with the Liverpool Fire Department Bunk-ins. This endeavor was coordinated with Deputy Chief Jason Ormsby of Liverpool and Greg Shaffer of MCFD.
On Friday the MCFD bunk-ins went to Adams Eden Camp (website: www.adamedencamp.com) in Lafayette for team building and self confidence experiences with Team Adventure CNY (website: www.teamadventurecny.com). Bunk-ins participated in many skill sessions that required them to work as a team. During many of these sessions the bunk-ins were blind folded, used non verbal communication, and participated in high and low rope element exercises. At the end of the day they presented Tom Gardner of Team Adventure and Paul Adams of Adams Eden Camp, MCFD T-shirts as a token of their appreciation for the knowledge that they have gained.
